Reflecting on my first year as Reaktor’s CEO

Pekka Horo

October 1, 2024

It feels incredible that I joined Reaktor a year ago. I’m filled with deep gratitude for the journey so far, and I feel privileged to work with talented, dedicated, and energetic people every day.

Before I started at Reaktor, I had heard about the strong company culture that emphasizes caring, self-empowerment, teamwork, and continuous improvement, to name a few attributes. All of that is true, and there’s a lot of depth to it in our daily work.

As I reflect on this moment and my fantastic experiences over the past year, I want to share a few key highlights.

A strong expert community

One of the things that drew me to Reaktor in the first place was its strong sense of community. From day one, I could see how much people care – about each other, about the work, and about the clients we serve.

I’ve seen this in our monthly get-togethers, where we regularly share insights and learn about our client projects.

Like how one of our teams has built a next-generation treatment planning system for brain radiosurgery with Zap Surgical.

How we’ve helped ABB build AI-powered sales and Orion to strengthen medicine innovation with generative AI.

Or how, throughout the years, tens and tens of our people have supported S Group’s transformation into a retail digital leader.

We thrive on collaboration, and it's a culture that I’m proud to be a part of and eager to continue fostering.

Building deep client relationships

Our clients come from a wide range of industries, and what has stood out to me is just how embedded we are in their success. We don’t just deliver tickets for our clients; we strive to work alongside them and become an integral part of their digital transformation projects and strategic initiatives.

Whether it's helping retail giants improve their customer experience or working with an industrial player on automation, our role is crucial. These partnerships are built on trust, and they remain a cornerstone of Reaktor’s strength.

I’ve had the joy of meeting tens of our clients in Finland, across Europe, the US, and in Japan. What’s stood out to me everywhere is the trust we have established with our clients, where we operate in a role where we can also occasionally challenge the client when needed – when we make our clients’ challenges our own, truly work as one team with them, and can recommend the unexpected.

Now, a new chapter

As the CEO, my mission is to support Reaktor’s next phase: How can we become even greater?

One of the first aspects we wanted focus on in our new strategy was defining a new global operating model. We're transitioning to a structure where the company is organized into business units, each focused on a specific industry. Our new business units are Aero, Defense & Security, Gaming & Entertainment, Health, Industrial, Retail, Public – and Cross-Industries, which serves as our core development and design unit.

This change gives these business units and our domain experts more autonomy to direct the business. It also enables us to build tighter expert communities and makes for a closer relationship between our experts and the business itself.

It allows for quicker decision-making and closer alignment with the needs of the industries they serve. This will help us be even more responsive to our clients and create more tailored solutions.

We’ve been planning this change for months, and I’m happy to share that the new business units have started functioning as September turned into October.

Additionally, we’re shifting our approach to overall company strategy

In the past, Reaktor refreshed the strategy about every three years. But we’re now moving to a continuous strategy model, which will be updated annually. This will keep us agile, responsive to market trends, and constantly in tune with our clients' evolving needs. During the coming months, we will actively focus on developing our offering and delivery model to pave the way for long-term future success.

Finally, I don’t believe you can do anything without a great team. That’s why, in addition to Reaktor’s growing expert consultant community – as an example, we’re currently looking for machine learning experts – I’ve been happy to develop our business, strategy, and people skillsets this year too.

Lasse, Hanna, Jouni, and Mari have strengthened our leadership team, and Samuli has taken the lead in expanding the Fusion Ecosystem.

Looking ahead

Reaktor’s foundation of expert community and client relationships is strong, and with the new strategy in place, we are better positioned than ever to innovate, grow, and lead in our respective industries.

The next chapter is about embracing change, staying close to our clients, and fostering a culture based on our core values where our people can thrive.

Thank you to everyone – our teams, our clients, and our partners – for making this first year an incredible one. I’m very excited about the future we are building together.

Here’s to what’s next!

Pekka
