Increasing public healthcare accessibility

The Finnish public healthcare sector faced a pressing challenge: patients had to wait unnecessarily long to get an appointment with a public healthcare professional, and there were no other service channels besides the phone and physical visit to a healthcare facility. Terveystalo bridges these gaps by consolidating essential services into a single, intuitive digital front door solution that allows public well-being counties to provide seamless access to care anytime, anywhere.

With 24/7 availability from the comfort of home, patients can easily do a self-triage, book appointments, consult healthcare professionals via real-time chat or asynchronous messages, and receive guidance without needing long waits or unnecessary travel. This enhances patient convenience, and optimizes healthcare resources through care pathway automation, and reduces pressure on physical clinics. By doing so, the Terveystalo Digital platform allows healthcare providers to focus on what matters most: delivering high-quality care.

Delivering impact in record time

By partnering together we were able to bring a fully integrated digital healthcare platform to life in under a year, which requires a bold, iterative approach. Rather than waiting for a fully-featured release, we adopted a minimum viable product (MVP) approach, launching early to gather real-world insights and refine the platform based on user feedback.

This rapid development process was driven by three key principles:

  • Prioritizing core functionalities such as chat, appointment booking, and secure authentication.
  • Embedding continuous collaboration with end-users to refine and enhance the experience.
  • Building a scalable, modular architecture enables seamless expansion to additional well-being counties.

Through this structured and impact-driven approach, Terveystalo’s platform, addresses immediate healthcare challenges and lays the groundwork for future innovation and nationwide scalability.

The platform

Terveystalo’s platform is a centralized hub for patient-practitioner interactions, built to support Finland’s public healthcare system. It enables real-time chat and video consultations with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. By integrating with patient record systems, it helps reduce administrative tasks like appointment scheduling and communication. The platform runs in a web browser on both mobile and desktop devices.

Developed in collaboration with municipal and hospital district leaders, the platform is designed specifically for wellbeing regions. It’s fully customizable, allowing providers to adjust the look, content, and services to match regional needs. It can be used independently or as part of a broader service package, integrating with third-party or Terveystalo’s care assessment services.

Since the launch of the platform, it has been adopted across Finland, reaching a user base of approximately 1+ million people. The implementation has resulted in several benefits:

  • Patients get direct digital access to healthcare services.
  • Healthcare professionals spend less time on admin work.
  • The platform is easy to use, lowering the threshold for patients to reach out for medical advice.
  • Its lightweight design makes implementation quick and straightforward.

New features are added regularly to keep up with the changing needs of Finland’s healthcare system. By giving wellbeing regions better tools for digital care, Terveystalo’s platform helps make healthcare more accessible and efficient. The groundwork is in place, and digital healthcare will only keep improving from here.
